How I Made The FS-2009 Theme

How I Made The FS-2009 Theme

Wordpress was developed to be extremely user friendly on both the front-end and the back-end, but also allow for some complex functions and features to be implemented for the more advanced and code knowledge of us. FS-2009 (the name of the theme released to FS at the start of the 2009 year) takes advantage of the many functions that WP has to offer, so I've created a screencast that covers all the PHP involved with creating this theme.

Corrections:

  • When I'm talking about the category highlighting, I didn't notice that I had accidentally transitioned off my localhost onto the main site. But my explanation afterwords is still correct.

About the author: Fire G

Hey, I'm the founder of Fire Studios, and thus, have my hands in everything that goes on here at FS. I manage the content, moderate the comments, design everything, code everything, provides a lot of articles, host the official podcast FS-Air, and run/manage most of the other sites in the FI family. Often times I'll come to be working on so many things that I hardly accomplish much, but that's what makes me who I am.

are the thumbnails auto generated, or do you manually resize each image and create a custom field for the image? i love the theme, and want to implement something similar for my articles and am looking for a faster way to do it than custom fields if one exists?

    Thanks for any tips!

@Jeremiah The thumbnails are determined by a custom field and the size is just set in the HTML. It's entirely possible though to set thumbnails based on post criteria (ex: Category, tags, etc...). I'll write up an article on it for Wednesday :) .

Cool, I look forward to that article as well! I didn't ask the other part of the question clearly I think, I'll try again - did you upload a square sized thumbnail to use or did you upload a regular image and use a plugin or something to crop to square?

I set them to a certain size, I don't auto scale. The screencast will be up tomorrow at 8:30.
